In a twist of fate, however, Ken is rescued by a waitress called Touka Kirishima, and when Ken recovers from his injuries, he realizes that he has become half-human and half-ghoul.
However, Rize is hardly what she seems to be and is a ghoul in disguise, and unsurprisingly, the date ends in catastrophe for Ken – he barely survives the encounter with Rize. A bookish college student, Ken unwittingly lands himself in the middle of this conflict when he goes on a date with a girl called Rize Kamishiro, who is an avid reader like himself. In this backdrop, the show follows the life of Ken Kaneki, a university freshman who finds himself in the middle of the underground war between the ghouls and the government. However, this task is far from easy as ghouls roam Tokyo in the guise of humans, living among the masses, and identifying them is a major problem. With attacks on citizens becoming a commonplace phenomena, the government constitutes a special task force called the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG), which is tasked with responding to reports of ghoul attacks and purging the city of Tokyo of the presence of ghouls. The ghouls, by their very nature, need to feed on human flesh for sustenance, and as a result, the ghoul population in Tokyo feasts on humans when night falls. However, the existence of ghouls in Tokyo takes a toll on the human population.
The events which unfold in the anime show are set in modern day Tokyo where frightening beings called “ghouls” also live clandestinely alongside humans. The plot of Tokyo Ghoul is a rather dark one and has political undertones insofar as it portrays how humans have a tendency to otherize every being different from themselves.
